This etching, Comité van Voorlichting, was created in 1795 by James Gillray. It's a pointed commentary on the political climate of the time. Gillray was a British caricaturist known for his satirical take on political and social life. This piece reflects the anxieties surrounding revolutionary ideas spreading from France into other parts of Europe. Notice the figures: one climbs a ladder towards a lamp, while others, seemingly in positions of authority, huddle below. They represent the 'Committee of Public Instruction', an organisation established during the French Revolution. Gillray is questioning here whether this 'enlightenment' is truly beneficial, or if it's a disruption of the natural order. The dark, almost grotesque features of the characters evoke a sense of unease. It challenges the viewer to question the intentions and impacts of those who claim to bring enlightenment, stirring us to consider who benefits and who suffers amidst societal upheaval.
