Alfred Freddy Krupa made ‘Before Storm’ using expressive brushstrokes of brown ink on paper. Just look at how the ink bleeds and pools, creating depth and movement. You can almost see the artist’s hand dancing across the surface, feeling the weight of the brush, the drag of the ink. The forms are evocative, like clouds gathering or the reflection of trees in still water. I imagine Krupa, pen in hand, outside somewhere, trying to capture the feeling in the air right before a storm breaks. It reminds me of some of the landscape drawings of Yvonne Jacquette, but also the writing of Etel Adnan. All of us artists, each in our own way, we’re trying to figure out how to express those fleeting, visceral moments. It’s a continuous conversation, a dance across time and space. Painting isn't about answers; it's about embracing the questions.
