Eugen Klimsch created this untitled artwork depicting scenes alongside text. Klimsch was working during a time of significant social change and industrialization in Germany, which led to increased awareness of the disparities in society. On the left we see a beggar at the roadside under a crucifix; this evokes the role of religion in the lives of the poor and highlights the theme of social inequality. On the right a fallen rider, perhaps symbolizing the fall of the aristocracy or the dangers inherent in social hierarchies. Klimsch is positioning the viewer to reflect on questions of identity, particularly in relation to faith, class, and social status.
