Here is a standing portrait of a couple made by Willem Hendrik Dikkenberg at an unknown date. I like to imagine him, in his studio in Haarlem, carefully arranging his subjects, maybe he would have been thinking about how to best represent them, to capture their essence, their relationship. The couple stands close, their bodies almost touching, and the gentleman holds a black hat. There is a lovely sense of tenderness. It's all blacks, browns and whites, and it's all about the balance of tonality and shape. The light falls across their faces, highlighting their features. You know, artists are always in conversation with each other, across time. What can we learn from these historical images? How can they inform our understanding of the human condition, of love, of loss, of hope? It's about embracing ambiguity, allowing for multiple readings, and finding new meanings in the process.
