Editor: This is "The Prompter" by Juan Muñoz, from the Tate collection. The tiled floor, the strange figures... It feels very theatrical, almost like a stage set. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It's a powerful tableau. Muñoz often used figures in ambiguous situations to explore themes of power, control, and social dynamics. Consider the title, "The Prompter"—who is being prompted, and what performance are they enacting? Editor: I hadn't thought about it that way. It makes you wonder about the roles we all play. Curator: Exactly. And how those roles are often shaped by unseen forces, by systems of authority that dictate our actions and limit our agency. Editor: That gives me a lot to think about. Thanks! Designed to occupy a full corner of gallery space, the principal feature of The Prompter is a raised platform resembling a stage. At the stage’s edge, a miniature prompter’s box is occupied by the sculpted figure of a dwarf. Although the dwarf’s upper body and head are hidden within the box we assume the figure looks out onto the stage, which is empty except for an abandoned drum. Positioned towards the back of the stage, the drum is within the prompter’s fictive gaze. Linoleum flooring of a bold geometric design covers the stage, accentuating the optical effect of spatial recession.
