Reinier Vinkeles created this print, "Zittende man omringd door vier staande figuren met attributen," sometime between 1741 and 1816, using etching and engraving. Vinkeles lived through a period of significant political upheaval in the Netherlands, and this work seems to reflect a moment of contemplation amidst change. The central figure, a seated man, is surrounded by four standing figures holding symbolic items. There’s a certain power dynamic suggested, with the seated man at the center of attention. What does it mean to be the man in the chair, literally in the seat of power? Though classical in style, the image perhaps seeks to explore contemporary ideals of leadership and virtue, using classical allegory to comment on 18th-century society. We are left to consider how these figures, frozen in ink, continue to challenge our understanding of power, gender, and civic duty.
