Rosalyn Drexler made this painting called *Is It True What They Say About Dixie*, and looking at it I can imagine her thinking, ‘What if I could create an image that captures the mood of this whole era? How can painting address the weight of our cultural situation?’ It's all done in a simple palette, mostly black and white, which gives it this stark, graphic feel. But then you see that pop of red in the one guy's tie, and it's like a punch in the gut. It grabs your attention and makes you wonder, 'Who is this guy? Why is he singled out?' Maybe the artist wanted to highlight a particular figure or idea. Drexler’s work makes me think about other artists too, like Warhol and the way he used repetition to comment on consumer culture. It feels like there’s a conversation happening across time. What is painting trying to say, and how can we make it new, make it matter?
