Giulio Cesare Procaccini created this drawing with pen and brown ink as a study of figures. Notice the juxtaposition of humans and animals, and the way they are intertwined within the composition. Consider, for instance, the prominent presence of the donkey, a beast of burden, often associated with humility and patience, yet also stubbornness. Throughout history, the donkey appears in various guises—from Christ's entry into Jerusalem to allegorical representations of ignorance. Its presence here invites contemplation on the dual nature of labor and virtue. The dogs also take centre stage, their depiction deeply rooted in cultural symbolism. In many traditions, the dog signifies loyalty, protection, and guidance. But also of the underworld, the shadowy realm of instincts and desires. This connection can be found as far back as ancient Egypt. These motifs are not merely aesthetic choices, but rather echoes of collective memory, passed down through generations. They touch upon the emotional and psychological depths of our shared human experience.
