Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich created this print, Venus binds Amor a mask, sometime in the 18th century. Dietrich lived during a period of significant social change, as traditional class structures were being questioned and new ideas about individual rights were emerging. In this engraving, we see Venus attempting to place a grotesque mask on Cupid. It prompts us to consider the relationship between love, beauty, and deception. We might ask ourselves, is Venus protecting her son, or is she complicit in hiding a darker truth about love? Consider the emotional exchange: a mother’s touch versus a son’s obscured identity. The work invites us to reflect on how we perform love, and what masks we wear in its name. Does the mask hide Cupid's true nature, or does it reveal something essential about the complexities of desire?
