Larry Bell made Fraction #1757, and I’m guessing, since it’s ‘96, it was made in 1996. Look at that square within a circle, a kind of portal or window into another dimension. I can just imagine Larry Bell in his studio, pushing the paint around, feeling the texture, and letting the colors bleed into each other. It's like he’s wrestling with the canvas, trying to capture something elusive. The grays and blacks create depth, while the reds and yellows add a bit of zing. The edges are so cool, right? They dissolve into this soft, fuzzy halo, like a dream fading at the edges. It's all about the push and pull between form and formlessness, control and chaos. When I look at the yellow block, I can feel an intentional meaning, but the artist may have been thinking about something else entirely. This painting speaks to the long conversation between artists across time, a constant exchange of ideas and inspirations that fuels creativity. It shows us that painting embraces uncertainty and ambiguity, inviting multiple readings rather than fixed interpretations.
