This photograph shows Wilhelmina en Dootje van Zijll de Jong in a garden, and was made anonymously. It looks like the image was taken with a box camera. The lens is pretty soft, but the tones range from light to dark gray, with lots of mid-tones. What’s so lovely about this image is the way that the photographer has captured the two women in this garden; they're framed by the foliage and the ironwork. The light is soft and diffused, and the whole thing has a kind of romantic feel. Looking at the highlights on the leaves, you can almost feel the warmth of the sun. It reminds me of the way Gerhard Richter uses photographic images as source material. This photograph is a great example of how a simple snapshot can be transformed into something special through the photographer's eye. Like the way the mundane can be elevated to art through the attention of the artist.
