This is Eugene Shellady’s Toleware Tin Tray, it’s undated, but made of paint on tin. There's something charmingly awkward about the way Shellady approaches his craft. Check out how the black paint of the ground is almost alive, like liquid metal. The floral details and train are rendered with an almost childlike simplicity, like a memory struggling to take shape. The artist isn’t trying to trick us, but instead invites us to reflect on the emotional experience of the artwork and contribute to its conceptual resonances. Look at how the smoke curls upwards, almost hesitant, and the way the train cars line up like mismatched teeth. There is a deliberate clumsiness. It's in that awkwardness that the piece finds its soul. Shellady's tray reminds me of the work of Martín Ramírez, another artist who embraced a unique vision, transforming simple materials into powerful expressions of the self. There's no one way to see this work, so let your mind wander and enjoy the ride.
