Lot 97 – Wall St., Williams St. 

This is Daniel Greene’s painting of Wall Street, an emblematic site of financial power. A suited man gesturing, perhaps an auctioneer, stands before the signs and symbols of Wall Street. The stark "Wall St" signage evokes the visual language of public transit, yet here, it becomes a symbolic marker of a place, a site, heavy with meaning—a place of money, ambition, and risk. The arrows indicating direction, and the clear "Exit" sign, draw from our collective understanding, guiding not only physical movement but also, perhaps, the movement of capital, the flow of opportunities, and the potential for escape or downfall. The arrow as a symbol is ancient, tracing back to early human communication, directing hunters and marking territories. It also embodies the psychological desire for progress, movement, and a forward trajectory. This symbol has shifted from literal guidance to metaphorical direction, representing ambition, goals, and the relentless pursuit of something beyond our present state. The constant resurfacing and adapting of this symbol reveals our deep-seated, almost subconscious, need for direction, purpose, and the belief in a path forward.
