Petrus Johannes Schotel made this work, "Vier zeegezichten," a series of four seascapes, in the 19th century using pen and brush in grey ink. During the Dutch Golden Age, seascapes became a distinct genre. Schotel situates himself within this legacy, while navigating the shifting economic and political currents of the 19th century, when the Netherlands was a prominent maritime power. His father was also a well known seascape painter, who he learned from. Look closely, and you will see the juxtaposition of calm and turbulent seas; the contrast may reflect not only the literal volatility of the sea, but also the precarious nature of human endeavor. This feeling is heightened by the monochromatic palette, lending a somber and reflective quality to the work. In Schotel's time, many Dutch artists were exploring themes of national identity and pride, even as the country faced challenges to its colonial power and economic dominance. Ultimately, "Vier zeegezichten" is more than just a set of seascapes; it encapsulates the complex interplay between humans and nature, and nation and identity.
