This is Robert Frank's "Guggenheim 379--Taos, New Mexico," a photographic contact sheet, and like all contact sheets, it's about process. It gives us everything, unedited and raw. I'm drawn to the red grease pencil marks. It's like Frank is talking to himself, circling moments, trying to decide what matters. There's an image of a building with a basketball hoop, isolated in the landscape. The red circles suggest a choice, but maybe it was also a way of seeing; a way of framing what he was looking for. You know, artmaking is a conversation, a constant dialogue with those who came before. Think about Walker Evans, another photographer obsessed with documenting the everyday. Frank's work feels like a continuation of that project, but with a more personal, almost diaristic approach. It's about how we see, how we choose, and ultimately, what we value. And that's always open to interpretation, right?
