This small photograph called 'Brug op de Gajoweg' was made by an anonymous artist, using a camera. The sepia tones really emphasize the way the light falls, with a kind of hazy wash over the whole image. I'm thinking about the surface, its smoothness, and how the photographic process is so different from painting because it depends on that registration of light. I love that the artist captures a bridge, which is such an interesting subject because it suggests a place in-between two places, a journey. It's almost like a drawing in some places, where the shadows create dark linear shapes. This reminds me of some of Edward Hopper's paintings, which also have that interesting combination of light and shadow, and the feeling of a moment captured in time. There's something about the way that art allows us to see the world in different ways, to pause and reflect on our experiences, and to find meaning in the everyday.
