Medi Wechsler Dinu painted this untitled landscape with boats using an expressionistic style that captures a visceral response to the sea and shore. Dinu, born in Romania in 1908, lived through two world wars and the rise and fall of Romanian communism. Her personal history is deeply rooted in a time of significant political and social upheaval, and as a Jewish woman, her identity shaped her experiences during this tumultuous period. There is a palpable sense of yearning and introspection, as if the boats, rendered with thick, gestural strokes, are metaphors for human vulnerability and the search for safe harbor.
