This paperweight was made by the Clichy Glasshouse in France, sometime between 1837 and 1885. It’s a beautiful example of lampworking, where glass rods are heated and shaped using a torch and tools. Look closely, and you’ll see how each tiny flower is crafted individually before being encased in clear glass. The arrangement of these delicate glass elements creates a captivating microcosm. The concentric floral arrangement in the paperweight is no accident, and demanded a high level of technical skill. What I find fascinating about paperweights like this is the skill involved, which is considerable, and the intention of the design. These are objects of pure visual delight and a perfect demonstration of how so-called decorative arts are every bit as ingenious as fine art. They are not just ornaments, but artifacts that blur the lines between art, craft, and industry.
