Simon Fokke created this engraving, “David in Hebron tot koning gekroond,” likely in the mid-18th century. Fokke was working during a period when the Dutch Republic was reflecting on its own identity through art and literature. This image depicts David’s coronation, a biblical event laden with themes of legitimacy and divine right. Yet, consider the cultural context in which Fokke lived: the Dutch Republic, while powerful, was also grappling with internal divisions. The image subtly negotiates questions of power and leadership. Who gets to lead, and by what authority? Notice how the characters in the foreground engage the viewer, their expressions a mix of awe, approval, and perhaps a touch of skepticism. The artist is inviting us to participate in the moment, prompting us to consider our own relationship to authority. This engraving becomes a site where historical narrative and contemporary social commentary meet, inviting viewers to consider who we crown as our leaders, and why.
