This is Salvator Rosa’s etching, “Man with Staff Seen from Behind”. Rosa was a key figure in the artistic landscape of 17th century Italy, a period of intense social stratification and cultural transformation. This image presents a figure, back turned to us, staff in hand, as he appears to ascend a rocky precipice. Consider what it means to only see the back of this man, this almost faceless representation, in light of the realities of class and identity in Rosa's time. The era was marked by stark divisions. Rosa, often championed the plight and experiences of the marginalized, the disenfranchised. Does this figure represent a statement on the common man’s struggle? Rosa himself noted, "I paint with fury, and I cannot restrain my transports." We can sense his emotional investment. Perhaps the simple act of climbing, rendered here, is a metaphor for social mobility.
