Edmé Samson created this porcelain figure, "Autumn," in the 19th century. Notice how the composition is dominated by the flowing lines of the draped figures, juxtaposed with the more angular structures they stand upon. The figures are elevated on rococo-style pedestals, elaborately decorated with swirling motifs and foliage, characteristic of Samson’s reproductions of earlier styles. The surface of the porcelain is smooth, which contrasts with the textured details of the grapes and leaves adorning the figures. Samson was known for his ability to mimic various ceramic styles, and the creation of these figures can be viewed through the lens of simulation and reproduction. This challenges conventional notions of originality and authenticity in art. The interplay between form and the structural elements of the artwork invites us to consider the cultural codes embedded within its aesthetic presentation.
