Monogrammist HK, a Dutch artist from the 20th century, created this work, titled ‘Bank’ using graphite. While the artist and exact date remain unknown, this drawing invites us to consider the history and identity of the Netherlands in the 20th century. What does the choice of a bank as a subject tell us about the societal values and economic structures of the time? Banks, as symbols of power and wealth, have often been at the center of social and political discourse. Who had access to these institutions, and who was excluded? Through the delicate medium of graphite, HK captures a sense of the everyday. ‘Bank’ encourages us to reflect on the relationship between personal experience and the larger forces of society. This simple drawing becomes a mirror, reflecting both the potential and the questions embedded in our shared history.
