This is "Malta, from Flags of All Nations, Series 2" made by Allen & Ginter, part of a series produced as collectible cards for Allen & Ginter Cigarettes. These cards, although small, offer a window into the late 19th century’s view of the world. They were created during a time of expanding global trade and colonial ventures, reflecting an increased interest in and, arguably, a romanticized perspective of different nations. The Maltese flag, emblazoned with the Maltese cross, represents a complex history marked by the influences of various empires. The flag reduces Malta to a singular symbol, ignoring the socio-economic realities of the Maltese people. The association of this image with cigarettes is also telling. Tobacco was one of the key commodities that drove colonialism. As such, the flag is a cultural artifact tied to commerce, consumerism, and the colonial gaze. Its simple, colorful design is a potent reminder of the stories we tell ourselves about nations, identity, and power.
