James Brooks made Aamo at some point in his career, using oil on canvas to bring it into being. The colors are what get me first, that deep, dark ground against the bright yellows and reds. There's something about the way Brooks lets the paint drip and flow, especially in those yellow streams against the ground, that makes me think about process. It's like he's letting the paint do its thing, guiding it but not controlling it completely. The paint is neither too thick nor too thin; it's just right, allowing the colors to blend and bleed in a way that feels both intentional and accidental. Look at that little red dot in the upper part of the canvas. It's almost like a period at the end of a sentence, or maybe it's just a playful accent. Either way, it adds a touch of whimsy to the whole thing. Brooks reminds me a bit of Helen Frankenthaler, who was also interested in letting the paint flow and stain the canvas. There's no one way to see it; it’s alive with possibilities.
