This photographic portrait of Mr. Mulder and a woman in traditional Friesian costume was captured by Aaltje de Jong. The sepia tones and the formality of the subjects evoke a sense of history. It makes me think about all the portraits that have been made in history. Imagine de Jong setting up the shot, directing her subjects with gentle instructions, and then holding very still for the exposure. It's interesting to think about how the very act of painting can become a kind of inquiry, not just for the artist but for the viewer too. I wonder, who were they really? What were their hopes, dreams, and fears? The image is evocative and, although documentary, it suggests a world of storytelling.
