Editor: So, here we have Romeyn de Hooghe’s engraving, "Fireworks of the French Refugees on the Herengracht at the Coronation of William III, 1689.” It's quite chaotic. You see explosions, people in boats, some even falling into the water. It feels like the celebration is…backfiring, literally! What do you see in this piece? Curator: The “backfiring,” as you say, is very telling. Consider what fireworks signify: celebration, yes, but also power, display, and the fleeting nature of glory. De Hooghe, I believe, is not simply depicting a party. He’s embedding a commentary about William's ascension and perhaps the hopes, and potential pitfalls, associated with this new rule as seen through the eyes of the French refugees. Note the Crown. What do you think of its prominent position? Editor: Well, it's huge and very central. It seems like the crown is causing all the fireworks. So, it’s more than just decoration; it is meant to be observed as an instrument of control. Curator: Precisely. And the refugees—their presence is key. They represent those seeking asylum under William's rule. The fireworks, ostensibly for him, also reflect their hopes pinned to his leadership. Look closer— are these figures celebrating, or are they reacting with fear? There's an ambiguity, a tension, embedded within this celebratory image. This contrast evokes the uncertainty these groups face and how history will interpret their fate under this ruler. Editor: I didn’t consider it from their point of view. Now I notice how some figures appear to be flailing about while some stand still with curiosity. Curator: It's a loaded image, using celebratory symbolism to explore themes of power, refuge, and the uncertain future that connects historical events and its diverse peoples. What started as chaos is indeed a careful calculation! Editor: It's amazing how much symbolism can be packed into what looks like a simple depiction of a celebration. Thank you, it gave me a different appreciation for engravings and symbolism!
