This small lithograph, “Neapolitan,” was made by the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company as a collectible insert in cigarette packs. The image is printed on thin paper, likely by a mechanized process. Lithography allowed for mass production, and the image itself served a dual purpose: to entertain consumers and to associate the Kinney Brothers brand with a sense of global culture. The figure's clothing and fishing net are rendered with graphic simplicity. The goal was less about artistry and more about creating a desirable product, an early example of capitalist marketing strategies seeping into the world of visual representation. While this may not fit the traditional definition of high art, the print reminds us that all objects have a material history tied to production, labor, and consumption.
