This is an "Onderrok," or petticoat, made from cotton with English embroidery, created by P. Titjen-Baas for the doll "Lilly." The garment's form is deceptively simple: a series of vertical pleats fall from a modest waistband to a decorative hem. The eye is drawn to the interplay between the dense, opaque fabric and the delicate, openwork embroidery. This contrast creates a visual rhythm, a push and pull between concealing and revealing. Consider how the creator’s choice of material and technique—the crispness of the cotton, the precision of the embroidery—imbue the object with a certain cultural weight. It challenges our understanding of craft and domesticity. Ultimately, this petticoat invites us to reconsider the subtle complexities embedded within the everyday. It asks us to look closer, to question the meanings we assign to objects and the cultural values they embody.
