Peter Hansen captured this watercolor of a young man wrapped in a plaid blanket, reclining in a deck chair, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. The plaid, with its crisscrossing lines, speaks to a deep human impulse to impose order and structure. We see echoes of this impulse in the grid-like patterns of ancient Roman city planning, or the geometric mosaics of Byzantine churches. The plaid, though, has evolved, moving from clan tartans signifying kinship to a more universal symbol of comfort and domesticity. The image evokes the feeling of introspection and reverie, a universal posture of repose. One cannot help but feel this quiet moment, reminiscent of the eternal cycle of rest and renewal that lies deep in our collective psyche. It’s as if the painting captures not just an individual, but an archetype of human experience.
