I feel like he deliberately plays with our expectations by juxtaposing historical references with modern imagery. Editor: Absolutely. The flatness of the plane on which the subject sits, a deliberate stylization, seems to me reminiscent of early Renaissance paintings or perhaps Byzantine mosaics, and draws attention to the careful placement of compositional elements, such as the echoing rhythm of birds behind her.
