John Edmonds made this photograph, Untitled (Hood 6), but when, I don’t know. Looking at this image, I am thinking about vulnerability and protection. I imagine what the photographer felt when they focused on the back of a hooded figure. I picture a scene where the subject hides their face and invites the viewer to contemplate themes of anonymity and identity. I look at the texture of the fabric, the precise details of the stitching, the soft gradations of light and shadow. I wonder about the artist's choices and how he managed to create such an intimate and emotionally charged portrait. The photograph reminds me of other artists who explore the human form, like Barkley Hendricks. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. And so, this image invites multiple interpretations and encourages us to embrace ambiguity.
