This Canal Scene with a Palazzo, was made by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner in the 18th century using pen and brown ink, brush and gray wash, over black chalk, on laid paper. The sepia ink is translucent, creating depth in the depiction of the waterway, buildings, and sky. The artist meticulously applies the wash to create a sense of volume and atmosphere, mimicking the effect of light on the water and architectural facades. While seemingly traditional, consider the social context: canals were vital trade routes, and palazzos symbols of wealth. Baumgartner emphasizes the labor of those navigating boats, juxtaposed against the leisure of the elite within the grand palazzo. By focusing on materials, making, and context, we challenge the notion of "fine art" as separate from everyday life, revealing the interconnectedness of labor, wealth, and artistic expression.
