Majel G. Claflin made this *Colcha* sometime before 1941, and it's an intriguing design on a modest scale. I imagine her in the studio, experimenting with colour and form, layering bands of paint to create these arches. The palette is earthy and muted—browns, blues, yellows, and greens—giving the work a grounded feel, yet the composition is playful. Look at the way she's echoed the arches with the little daisy-like flowers, adding a touch of whimsy and the soft brown scallops trimming the lower edge. The overall effect is balanced and rhythmic, like a visual song. I'm always drawn to the material aspects of painting, and here, the paint looks relatively thin, allowing the surface texture to peek through. It’s a reminder that painting is not just about what you see, but also about the physical act of applying paint, the gestures, and the choices made. What a treasure! It’s a small window into a world of creative exploration, reminding us that art is a conversation across time, inspiring new visions and possibilities.
