This 'Panel' was designed by Owen Jones, a British architect and designer known for his studies of Islamic art. Jones played a pivotal role in shaping Victorian aesthetic sensibilities, particularly through his publication of "The Grammar of Ornament" in 1856. This book became a highly influential sourcebook of design principles drawn from various cultures, including Islamic art. Jones admired what he perceived as the mathematical precision and harmonious balance in Islamic design, believing it offered a path to elevate British decorative arts. Look closely, and you'll notice the gold calligraphy set against a deep blue background. Jones incorporated Arabic script into his designs, likely without fully understanding its linguistic meaning. His usage of the script can be seen as both an appreciation of its aesthetic qualities and as a form of cultural appropriation, typical of the colonial era. The repeating pattern invites contemplation, and the convergence of cross-cultural influences prompts us to reflect on themes of cultural exchange.
