This landscape between Calais and Boulogne was created by Andreas Schelfhout using pen and brown ink with brush in grey, on paper. Looking at the work we see a muted palette, a consequence of the materials used by the artist. Schelfhout captured a moment in time using the simple tools of pen, brush, and ink. The application of ink wash in grey, in particular, creates subtle tonal variations, giving depth and atmosphere to the scene. The subject also speaks of labor and the rural economy. The figures with their horse-drawn carts hint at the agricultural activities of the region, reminding us of the intimate connection between the people and the land. The presence of the figures engaged in their daily work also provides a social context to the landscape, reminding us of the human presence and activities that shape the environment. Considering this artwork, it shows how close observation and skillful use of materials can be used to represent the cultural and economic aspects of a particular place.
