The brothers Moreau made this view of Wijk bij Duurstede in 1672, and it’s really just a minimal drawing. Look at the surface, the paper: it’s sort of stained and you can tell that it's been buffeted by time. I like how that staining acts as a kind of atmospheric effect, as if it’s creating a weather system for the scene. The drawing is subtle and economical, but you can tell that the brothers knew their town well, with a line here and a mark there suggesting the distinct architectural forms. The image feels complete. The line that defines the bank is so simple, just a slight zig, but it’s enough to suggest form and space. The piece reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, where so much is implied with such small gestures, it’s more about space and suggestion than representation. Ultimately, art is a conversation across time and ideas.
