Editor: Here we have a selection of twelve biblical prints after J. Buys by Reinier Vinkeles, dating from the late 18th century, done in engraving. The somber atmosphere and theatrical poses suggest drama, but I’m left wondering about the specific scenes they depict. What story might this be telling, in your view? Curator: Well, imagine stumbling upon a forgotten stage set, all chiaroscuro and whispers of past performances! Look at the theatrical lighting, wouldn’t you say? The single light source seems determined to expose something…a secret perhaps? The drama of the Baroque style certainly seizes our attention, with those figures caught in such exaggerated states of grief, fear, or maybe awe. And up above, what’s with the skull and other objects in the archway there? It looks as though there's been a theft of ancient props! Editor: A secret, lit dramatically… yes, and that shadowy doorway suggests another space and untold horrors or narratives. I didn’t even notice the skulls, to be honest. Is that an important symbolic thing in Baroque art? Curator: Oh, definitely! Skulls in art are classic *memento mori*, little reminders of our own mortality. Artists in earlier periods like to tuck them everywhere. They whisper "remember you must die", amidst life's grandest dramas. Though the figures dominate here, that architectural background—and its subtle nod to death, reminds us the human stories always play out on a bigger, eternal stage. Isn't that a thought? What kind of tales do you suppose these prints meant to tell? Editor: Something of morality and faith perhaps. It’s intriguing to consider how death was so explicitly woven into life and art. Thanks! Curator: Yes! Each print offers us another thread into those complex narratives that intertwine mortality and meaning, from long ago. So much to imagine.
