This tall basket with a wide mouth and handle was made by Seigetsu, using bamboo. While we don't have a specific date for this piece, the artistry of Japanese bamboo weaving has deep roots in the country’s history. What began as a craft to create functional objects gradually became intertwined with artistic expression, partly thanks to the promotion of tea culture and flower arranging. These practices elevated the status of the objects used within them, including baskets. Looking at the basket's refined weaving and elegant form, it's easy to see how this piece transcends mere utility. The choice of bamboo, a material abundant in Japan, also speaks to a connection with the land. This basket would have been displayed in the home, or used for the practice of ikebana. Historical research helps us to understand the craftsmanship, cultural values, and artistic movements which shaped the production of this humble yet beautiful object.
