Curatorial notes
"Verschillende Dranken", or "Different Drinks", is an undated print by De Ruyter & Meijer, likely made during the late 19th or early 20th century. The images capture social scenes centered around different beverages, offering a glimpse into the social rituals and class distinctions of the time. Notice how each scene presents different drinks in different contexts. There's the innocence of children drinking water, the familial setting of coffee, and the camaraderie of friends sharing wine. Beer is depicted in a working-class setting, while champagne represents luxury. The print subtly reinforces social hierarchies, presenting each drink as a marker of identity and belonging. This print invites us to consider how our choices – what we consume and with whom we consume it – reflect and shape our social identities. It shows us that something as simple as a drink can be loaded with cultural meaning.
