This sketchbook with 61 pages was made by Cornelis Vreedenburgh. The cover is so interesting because it's worn and marked – you can see the evidence of its use. I imagine Vreedenburgh carting it around, maybe to different landscapes. I'm thinking about what it’s like to work in a series, page after page. There's a real intimacy in the way the book looks and feels. The artist probably knew the weight of it in his hands, the way it opened, and the texture of the pages. I wonder what kinds of lines and marks are buried in those pages. The sketchbook is a space for thinking, dreaming, and working through ideas - a portable studio that allows you to test out different ideas. It reminds me that art is not just about the final product but about the ongoing process of exploration.
