André Masson painted this bad dream, called "In the Tower of Sleep," in oil on canvas. The colors are turned up to eleven, aren't they? It's all reds, yellows, and browns, clashing in a way that feels… well, kinda violent. The paint is applied with a wild energy. Look at the way the brushstrokes swirl and collide, creating a sense of chaotic movement. Thick and thin areas alternate, giving the surface a real physical presence. There's this one spot, near the center, where the red paint is particularly thick, like a wound that just won't close. It's raw and visceral, echoing the overall feeling of the piece. Masson reminds me a bit of Arshile Gorky, both artists wrestling with the subconscious and pushing the boundaries of what painting could be. It’s a reminder that art isn't always about answers, sometimes it's about embracing the beautiful, messy questions.
