This photograph of the Drakenkloof near Eisenach was taken by Georg Jagemann sometime in the 19th century. The image is a study in light and shadow, made possible by the chemical processes of early photography. Look closely, and you can see the contrast between the dense, dark foliage and the narrow strip of light cutting through the chasm. This was a popular format, postcards and photographs like this one were collected as souvenirs of industrial tourism. The act of photography itself was becoming increasingly democratized, requiring less skill, and becoming more accessible as the technology advanced. This image reflects a broader trend of documenting and consuming landscapes, transforming natural wonders into commodities. Considering materials, making, and context, this photograph encapsulates the changing relationship between art, technology, and society in the 19th century.
