Editor: This is an untitled print by John Piper, held at the Tate. I find the architecture rendered in browns and creams rather brooding. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Note how Piper contrasts the solidity of the structures with the ephemeral quality of light. The inscribed words on the architecture act as palimpsests, layers of cultural memory hinting at human presence and the passage of time. Consider how these visual symbols connect with the viewer's own sense of history. Editor: That’s fascinating. It definitely makes me rethink my initial impression. Thank you! Curator: You're welcome. It's always rewarding to uncover the stories hidden within the image.

This lithograph is one of two commissioned by Westminster School. Piper did not make many paintings or drawings of places in London, except when specifically commissioned. He had not lived there since soon after giving up his first career as a lawyer, and he preferred to work in isolated places where he could not be overlooked. Typically, there are no people in this view, which looks as if it were seen at night. Gallery label, July 2008
