This sketch on paper, made by George Bunker between 1923 and 1991, presents us with a whirlwind of lines, chaotic yet compelling, that hints at a landscape. Though abstract, the suggestion of trees evokes a primeval forest, a recurring motif throughout art history. We see this in the sacred groves of ancient Greece, spaces imbued with spiritual significance and echoed later in Romantic paintings where the forest symbolizes the sublime power of nature. The use of quick, gestural lines captures a raw, unfiltered energy, reminiscent of automatic drawing techniques used by Surrealists to tap into the subconscious. This approach mirrors our own minds, where fleeting thoughts and impressions often manifest as fragmented images. The landscape, in its various forms, becomes a canvas for our collective anxieties, desires, and memories, an emotional landscape mirrored in the human psyche.
