Mathieu Lauweriks made this vignette with ibisses using printmaking techniques, though the exact date remains a mystery. The whole thing feels like an exercise in symmetry, with these stylized birds facing each other, and these hypnotic eyes staring straight at you. It’s a balance of shapes, the way the black ink sits against the paper, creating this dance between positive and negative space. There’s a real sense of geometry, almost like a puzzle. I’m particularly drawn to the beak of the ibis. It curls around, creating this tight, contained form that’s echoed in the shape of the eye above. These lines aren't just decorative; they’re structural, building up the entire composition. Looking at this, I'm reminded of the work of Hilma af Klint. Just like Lauweriks, she had an interest in geometric abstraction, using the visual language to express something spiritual or unseen. Ultimately this piece is about opening our eyes to the hidden structures and patterns that surround us.
