This silver medal, created in 1688 by Dutch artist Jan (I) Smeltzing, commemorates the birth of James Francis Edward Stuart, the son of James II of England and VII of Scotland. The obverse depicts the infant prince, cradled in a shell-shaped tub, while the reverse features a tree with three blossoms, symbolic of the birth. Smeltzing was a prolific medallist, producing numerous commemorative works in the late 17th century. This medal is a testament to the historical importance of the birth of the "Old Pretender," who was a central figure in the Jacobite movement seeking to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne.
