This silver medal, created in 1688 by Dutch artist Jan (I) Smeltzing, commemorates the birth of James Francis Edward Stuart, the son of James II of England and VII of Scotland. The obverse depicts the infant prince, cradled in a shell-shaped tub, while the reverse features a tree with three blossoms, symbolic of the birth. Smeltzing was a prolific medallist, producing numerous commemorative works in the late 17th century.
