This is Robert Frank's “Guggenheim 354--Houston, Texas”, a photo made sometime in the mid-20th century. What grabs me here is the way Frank presents the film strip itself. It’s like he’s saying, hey, this is the raw stuff, the source. The texture is all grain and grit, those black and white frames feel so immediate and unpolished. It makes you think about what Frank chose to include, and what he left out. Check out the frames toward the bottom of the strip, with the hats. Frank has marked these with a grease pencil, maybe this was his pick of the bunch? Seeing the world through Frank’s eyes is like tapping into a stream of consciousness, where fragments of everyday life become these little poetic moments. I’m reminded of Helen Levitt, another street photographer who found beauty in the mundane. Ultimately, Frank reminds us that art isn’t about perfection, it’s about process, about seeing and feeling your way through the world.
