Mark Rothko made this untitled painting on paper with either oils or acrylics, in a classic horizontal composition that the artist is known for. Looking at it, I think, oh man, he’s trying to make the top rectangle feel like atmosphere, like dark clouds gathering. It's as if he’s inviting us to experience it as a mood, a moment. I can imagine him, brush in hand, layering the paint, trying to find the right balance, letting the colors breathe and find their own space. The bottom rectangle feels more earthy, like soil, like a ground. When I look at this painting, I feel that, maybe painting for Rothko was a kind of emotional research, he was in conversation with all the painters of the past, and that he hoped someone would carry it on into the future. It's not just about color; it’s about feeling, about making the invisible visible.
