Heinrich Aldegrever made this drawing of "Seated Satyr Among Three Heads and Foliage Motifs" with pen in gray ink on paper. Note how the symmetry in Aldegrever’s composition is quite striking, isn't it? The satyr is centered, with a head on either side, and another larger one looming above. The artist balances organic forms with structured symmetry by using the curvilinear shapes of the foliage which contrast with the defined faces and bodies. This combination reflects a Renaissance interest in classical mythology and ornamental design. What can be said about the balance and visual harmony achieved by Aldegrever's choice of medium? Ultimately, this drawing shows us the ongoing dialogue between classical and decorative arts during the Renaissance, and Aldegrever’s own place within this exchange. The use of symmetry and classical motifs invites continuous reading and interpretation.
