This pipe stem and pipe bowl was made by the Bamum people, with no exact date recorded. Look at how the Bamum artist has transformed the wood and metal into something that tells a story, or maybe holds a secret. I love how tactile this piece is; you can almost feel the textures just by looking at it. The handle has this intricate, almost lace-like pattern carved into it, which makes me think about the slow, deliberate process of its creation. The smooth, dark bowl contrasts nicely with the handle's lighter, more detailed surface. I want to touch it! Notice the faces carved near the bowl. They have a simplified, geometric quality that feels both ancient and modern at the same time. It reminds me of some of the work of artists like Modigliani, who were inspired by African art. It's amazing how these echoes and conversations happen across cultures and time. What a piece!
